Songs My Brothers Taught Me Acquired By
Fortissimo Films For International Distribution
Has Garnered Multiple Offers Prior To EFM

Chloé Zhao

Fortissimo Films has acquired the international rights to Chloé Zhao's powerful feature debut, Songs My Brothers Taught Me. The film, which premiered at Sundance, is among one of the rich selection of diverse films on the company's EFM slate.

The deal was negotiated by Fortissimo's Senior VP of Acquisitions, Berenice Fugard, and Producer Nina Yang Bongiovi. On finalizing, Berenice Fugard commented: "We were transported by the warmth and truthfulness of Chloé Zhao's beautiful film. Songs profoundly resonates by giving a voice to a universe that exists among us, yet is unknown to most. We are all so happy to be working with Significant Productions." Echoing those strong sentiments, Nina Yang Bongiovi stated: "This is a film that needs to be seen as it reflects the changing climate in the U.S. and abroad of diversity related matters. It is truth, and the authenticity of Chloé's vision speaks for itself. It is a dream to have Fortissimo as our partner."

Songs My Brothers Taught Me written and directed by the Beijing-born Zhao, is a compelling and complex portrait of modern day life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation that explores the bond between a brother (John Reddy) and his younger sister (Jashaun St. John), who find themselves on separate paths to rediscovering the meaning of home. Chloé Zhao sensitively infiltrates isolated Indian Country to offer a rare, modern gaze keenly felt through the eyes of her magnetic non-professional lead actors, providing a universally resonant tale set amid the magnificent, promising wild of young generation Lakotas.

Songs My Brothers Taught Me - Significant Productions

Songs My Brothers Taught Me was produced by Significant Productions' Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi. Mollye Asher and Angela C. Lee also served alongside Zhao, as producers.

Prior to the European Film Market, Fortissimo had already received multiple offers from international territories. Significant Productions retains North American rights to the film.

Fortissimo Films' 2015 EFM slate includes Breathe Umphefumlo, which premieres at the Berlin Film Festival.
