Hail, Caesar! Competition 2016 /USA/GBR 2015 Directors: Joel & Ethan Coen
The Minister of State and Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Prof. Monika Grutters, the Mayor of Berlin Michael Muller, Jury President Meryl Streep and Festival Director Dieter Kosslick open the 66th Berlin International Film Festival tonight at the Berlinale Palast at 7.30 pm. Hail, Caesar! from Academy Award winning director duo Joel and Ethan Coen is the opening night film in Competition. Hail, Caesar! takes place during the latter years of Hollywood's Golden Age, during the studio system's heyday, and features an all-star cast including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Scarlett Johansson (pictured), Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Channing Tatum. The comedy follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix. The Coen Brothers presented The Big Lebowski in the Berlinale Competition programme in 1998, and their take on the western True Grit opened the 61st Berlin International Film Festival in 2011.
