Each year Dieter Kosslick and his team at the Berlinale curate the film festival, it simply gets better with each year. Taking a visual tour across the different sections of the festival on the user friendly, easy to navigate and informative website, the passion for the art of filmmaking and filmmakers is palatable.

Countless numbers of my colleagues and filmmaker friends each year comment on how the Berlinale makes them feel an integral part of the festival, that the filmmakers, the films, the content, and substance matter, and that their work can make a difference. The Berlinale never fails to deliver the magic of the movies, from films like Hail Caesar, to thought-provoking feature documentaries as the genre grows in stature with the film-going audience.

In his online video on the Berlinale website, Dieter Kosslick speaks with deep humanity about the goals of the Berlinale, a cultural event that bring together filmmakers from around the globe, showcasing their films through their own cultural windows, illustrating the different ways of life and living, and philosophies: how the filmmakers and the world are dreaming of happiness, and that in our heads and hearts we are all aiming for a better world, and diversity is one of many keys; the opportunity to learn from our contemporaries in different countries whose lives, hopes, dreams and aspirations we can live vicariously through the art form of film, the 21st Century visual communicator.

Always current and up to the moment in quick measure, the Berlinale Special curated three films on the passing of the iconic David Bowie, the brilliant actor Alan Rickman and one of Italy's greatest filmmakers Ettore Scola – the Berlinale pays homage to these great artists. On Alan Rickman, David Bowie and Ettore Scola, Dieter Kosslick made the following comments: On Alan Rickman: '"His ability to transform himself, his artistry in playing ambivalent characters and his distinctive voice made Alan Rickman a great actor."

The Berlinale commemorates Alan Rickman with a showing of Sense and Sensibility by Ang Lee, winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 1996. The screening will take place at Kino International on Tuesday, February 16 at 10:30 pm.

On David Bowie: "David Bowie was a tremendous musician, an avant-garde artist who expressed his creativity in many disciplines."

To commemorate David Bowie, The Man Who Fell to Earth by Nicolas Roeg will screen with the support of Studiocanal at Friedrichstadt-Palast on Friday, February 12 at 9:00 pm.

On Ettore Scola: "Ettore Scola was a master of Italian comedy, a social critic who observed everyday life with intelligence, wit and political acumen."

To commemorate Ettore Scola, his film Le bal screens at CinemaxX 6 on Thursday, February 18 at 4:00 pm.

The Berlinale team are up to the minute with technology introducing video clips for the filmmakers to present their work, increased social media and many more enhancements to the website. The website makes it super easy for the filmmakers, industry executives, and the huge fan base of the Berlinale in Berlin and the surrounding cities to enjoy the potpourri of 432 films from around the world.
