Editorial Comment MIPJunior 2017
MIPJunior Celebrates 25 Years - The Animation Art Form Has Evolved Advanced And Grown Making The Process Of Creating Animation In Studios Worldwide More Affordable & The Name Of The Game

Rahan - Xilam Animation - the company works with studios worldwide
Animation dominates the genre of product available for buyers at the 25th anniversary of MipJunior this year. The two day event prior to MIPCOM boasts Matchmaking and Pitching sessions with Buyers and Commissioners for independent filmmakers from across the globe, a screening library with over 1200 projects, and conferences where the participants can hear from leading executives and content providers what the next evolution and where animation programming with take audiences. Increasingly we are seeing a seamless interaction and interdependence on the different platforms and distribution outlets available as the digital era has cemented into the distribution flow across all genres.

Animation from the major companies’ animation has long being a staple in the mix of mainstream theatrical releases, from new renditions of old favorites like The Jungle Book to sequels such as: The Minions, Despicable Me, and The Nut Job to name a few.

With the need by consumers for ‘bites of information’ as well as ‘visual bite size animation content’ - the different types of animation in the genre has grown exponentially. Exposure to animation was once dominated by viewing the genre on the small screen – with the advancement in mobile phones, these mini screens have overtaken this medium – with animation now used more extensively to animate projects, creating a scenario with oneself on social media, or creating content covering all kinds of subject matter and distributing via you tube and Vimeo.

The above video is an example how the art of animation has evolved and is exciting. Imagin&Tonic is a start-up company founded in 2015 and focused on innovation and how it can be applied to entertainment. The company started as a VR/AR (Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality) video games company, but soon realized that the knowledge could be applied in the animation industry, and started to build animation tools based on real time rendering engines. Founders brother Javier and Alejandro Rayon have over 20 years’ experience in the software industry and broadcast TV. Javier’s software experience covers 20 years as an engineer, lately specializing in UX and mobile interfaces design. Alejandro has worked in mainstream broadcasting TV for 10 years, and 3 years in the videogames industry. Together they formed Imagin&Tonic based on seeing the need and applying their expertise to the entertainment industry. Highly innovative, small, but agile they made and sent out the above invitation for participants at MIPJunior to meet them during MIPJunior. http://www.imaginandtonic.com/ - info@imaginandtonic.com

The benefits of the digital era and technology have enabled independent companies and entrepreneurs to realize their concepts on an affordable scale. Among the bigger producers of animation films there is the story production construct to find a way for animation to appeal equally to adults. Animation content producers are vying to find a way of embracing the ‘family viewing experience’ through animation. However getting the balance is tricky because whilst children relate instantaneously to visuals, conveying the cerebral message and its immediate impact in sync with the visual is more difficult. Producers of animation content trying to work with equating the issue agree it is an ongoing challenge. Others argue the disconnect is not of any import, the kids get the visual – the adults the impact of the cerebral message – the question however remains: are both consumers equally satisfied with the viewing experience?
