Bavaria Lets The Right One In
Eddie-The Sleepwalking Cannibal
Charlotte Rampling in I Anna, one of the films Bavaria International is selling at Cannes 2011
Bavaria Film International prior to Cannes picked up Eddie – The Sleepwalking Cannibal, an English-speaking genre cross-over gem with upscale commercial prospects, adding it to its line-up of pre-sales.
Writer-director Boris Rodriguez commented: “Eddie pushes the boundaries of the horror genre and weaves together a story that blends gory friendship, love and, of course, sleepwalking cannibalism. Eddie is a playfully malicious film that allows its audience to enjoy the kind of story that is hard to find in a landscape littered with straightforward horror movies. It is fun, fresh, lighthearted and seriously twisted, the way a sleepwalking-cannibal movie should be.”
Thorsten Ritter, Head of Bavaria Film International says: “We were scouting for a sophisticated horror-comedy for a long time and the potential of Eddie was immediately evident. Boris Rodriguez’s screenplay has this assured tonality in an original story with deadpan humor. The first rushes gave us a glimpse of the rich visual adventure we’ll have in our hands. With a superb performance by European star actor Thure Lindhardt in the lead role we’re confident to have found a follow-up to our extremely successful horror-romance Let The Right One In.”
The dark comedy stars Thure Lindhardt (Angels & Demons, Into the Wild) as Lars and Dylan Smith (300, Murder on the Orient Express) as Eddie, along with Georgina Reilly (Pontypool), Stephen McHattie (2012) and Alain Goulem (Snake Eyes). Shooting was wrapped at the end of March. The first footage is available at Cannes.
Eddie – The Sleepwalking Cannibal tells the story of Lars (Thure Lindhardt), once a glimmering star on the young art-world sky, who loses inspiration and slips away from the paths of glory. But Lars’s creativity comes at a very high price – his inspiration is pure carnage: blood, guts and limbs. As a therapeutic measure, his agent Ronny sends him off to a small Canadian town in the middle of nowhere to teach art in the safety of a country retreat. Together with one of his students, 30-year-old Eddie, Lars embarks on nightly sleepwalking adventures. And soon again the artist’s brush is flowing over white canvas, with more creativity than ever before.
An official Canadian-Danish co-production from Michael A. Dobbin (The Maiden Danced to Death), Ronnie Fridthjof (Armadillo), Boris Rodriguez, with Michael Solomon, Steve Moretti and Sven Schnell as executive producers, Eddie is supported by Telefilm Canada and the Danish Film Institute.
Eddie – The Sleepwalking Cannibal follows the acquisitions of London-based neo-noir I, Anna starring Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne, the partly-animated, upbeat Dublin-set drama Superhero by Ian Fitzgibbon, and Paris-set Michael Caine starrer Mr. Morgan’s Last Love
